Our History
Under the Same Moon is the American fund-raising arm of Asociación Bendición de Dios - a nondenominational, nonprofit school and community development organization in San Juan Alotenango, Guatemala. Students in Guatemala have to pay approximately $360 per year to attend public schools to cover the cost of uniforms, books and supplies. Most families in Alotenango live below the global poverty line and cannot afford these school fees. Asociación Bendición de Dios educates about 500 pre-K through grade 6 children for which 95% of the families pay a nominal fee or contribute a few hours of work a month. Programming has been added for grades 7 and 8 in recent years. The Asociación is able to provide this support on a budget of merely $250,000 per year.
In 2006, after adopting a child from Guatemala, Rebecca Center, a bilingual educator in Framingham, MA public schools, began a collaboration with the Bendición de Dios School. She purchased jewelry from a Guatemalan women's artisan collective and marketed it at teacher conferences, churches, and other venues in New England.
In 2008, Rebecca expanded her work through the formation of a Social Justice Working group through the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Framingham.
In 2011, the nonprofit organization, Under the Same Moon, was formed to build on and expand the work started by Rebecca.
